GREEN TIPS FOR AN ECO-FRIENDLY HOME
Here's how to design an environmentally friendly home
Green and Sustainable Home, It's Possible
A green and sustainable home is possible. Starting by making furniture choices that are biodegradable, recyclable, and non-toxic. The Climate Action Summit 2019 concluded with many good intentions. Among them, one stands out: the elimination of single-use plastic, even in design.
Wood is definitely the preferred material for homes, thanks to its multiple sustainable properties. It also has various uses: from furniture to kitchen bowls, from cutting boards to children's toys, and even toothbrushes. The focus on climate change is also evident in upcoming trends. The probable Pantone Color of the Year 2020, inspired by Bleached Coral, is no exception to this trend.
Wood, Mirror of Nature at Home
A sustainable home is furnished with materials where natural fibers reign supreme. This result can start with the choice of wood for furniture, the quintessential natural material. However, for furniture to be truly sustainable, the wood should come from certified forests. In other words, it should be harvested in exchange for planting new trees. Bamboo or cork are also natural materials. Cork, in particular, is often used to make furniture and useful accessories in the home. And it is important to remember that it is not enough to buy sustainable furniture.
It is also necessary to clean them with environmentally friendly products and complement them with accessories where natural fibers prevail. In rustic homes, terracotta can be chosen as a solution in line with the environment. For a concrete example, terracotta tiles naturally regulate humidity, without the risk of mold formation. And not only that: they promote the absorption of odors.
VERTICAL GARDENS AGAINST POLLUTION
They are the answer to the fight against fine dust, noise pollution, formaldehyde, pathogens, and mold. We're talking about vertical gardens that create greenery where there would be little "traditional" space for it to grow. A decidedly interesting solution, especially for those living in cities. And if equipped with integrated sound-absorbing panels, they can also help reduce noise pollution.
Vertical greenery also ensures humidity levels that make it particularly difficult for mold, dust mites, and pathogens to proliferate.
NATURAL PAINTS: THE BEST WATER PAINTS
It is also advisable to choose colors and paints that do not contain VOCs (volatile organic compounds). These substances contribute to indoor environmental pollution. In this regard, it is advisable to opt for wall paints, enamels, and varnishes classified as A+ (which corresponds to a low level of emissions).
On the other hand, those belonging to class C have a high level of emissions. The preferred natural paints are water-based ones. However, it is still important to ensure that they are non-toxic. Moreover, to guarantee the air quality in the home, it is advisable to choose products labeled with at least an Ecolabel.
